The Pathway Or The Player
This week on Krush Performance, we tackle a very important question:
Are we preparing the player for the pathway OR are we preparing the pathway for the player?
Get set for a masterclass-like conversation on player development. While baseball is the theme because the Major League Baseball season has gotten underway, make no mistake, this week’s conversation goes well beyond baseball and perhaps beyond sport. The topics here apply to learning and skill development anywhere people are working to get better and master a skill set.
I talk with Dave Turgeon, Head Varsity Coach at the IMG Academy. Dave was drafted by the Yankees and then went on to coach, manage and help build the Pittsburgh Pirates player and coaching development programs.
Change can be good as long as the change is meaningful and moves us forward in the right direction. We discuss the new rules Major League Baseball is testing in the minor leagues this season and we take a deep dive with a look at the player development and coaching landscape in today’s game.
Coaches, are your players learning and developing, or are they just following your lead?
How do we create decision-makers, problem solvers, and learning environments chock-full of self-discovery opportunities? Helping your players make sense of what just happened and how to learn from the failures are all critical in true player development. It’s all about the player, we discuss this and much more.
As always, if you have a topic you would like us to investigate get to us at KrushPerformance.com and keep yourself on the cutting edge of human performance.

Player Performance Pathways – Adapting To The New Landscape
Pathways come and pathways go but never have we seen such a dramatic change in player developmental pathways like what we are seeing right now in professional baseball.
Starting this season, there are 42 fewer teams in professional baseball as the minor league contraction plan has taken place. Over 1000 players who would normally be signed to pro-ball will now be looking for places to play.
This week, we talk with Kerrick Jackson, President of the newly formed MLB Draft League, a new 6 team summer league for college and elite high school players. What role will the league play in the developmental pathway? We find out.
Staying on the subject of baseball, there are some new rules being tested this season, larger bases, controlling the shift, 15-second pitch clocks, and Robo Umps. We share our thoughts.
Also, after missing an entire season, are you ready to play? We need to approach the return to sport with great caution. These are not normal times. We’ll discuss what you need to consider as we get set to return to play.

Sports Injuries – Reduce Your Risk
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when a professional athlete gets injured? I’ve been there and I have seen it.
Upwards of 20% of athletes have had an injury in the last year.
It’s incredible to see the interdisciplinary team jump into action to assess the injury, decide on the best treatment plan then map out a return to play strategy for that particular athlete with all of these experts involved.
This is Locker Room Sport Medicine and it’s a dream situation. A dream that I have for developing athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone who simply loves to get out there and play.
Well, I’m not the only one with this dream, in fact, there are some special people out there making it happen right now.
This week, we are joined by Dr. Dhiren Naidu, Associate Professor at the U of A, Head Team Physician for the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers, Vice President of the NHL’s Team Physicians Society and Founding Member at Health Pointe Medical. Dr. Naidu was also the Medical Lead for the NHL Bubble.
I talk to Dr. Naidu about why the interdisciplinary locker room approach to sport medicine, assessment, treatment, and return to play is so effective in getting athletes back to their sport.
Also, we will discuss the massive effort that made the return of professional sport possible amidst the COVID shutdown.
We will also visit with, Kelly Hodgson of United Sport and Cycle, with COVID shutting down sport for a year are you ready to return? Does your equipment still fit? We will look at the importance of equipment fitting for safety and performance – what you need to know.
Get set because we cover a ton of ground on this episode of Krush Performance.

The Value Of Talent
The true currency in sport is your value.
The value you bring to the table. We look at what true value is and why talent and skill are only a small piece of the high-performance puzzle.
“A player who makes a team great is better than a great player.” ~ John Wooden
When we talk with our elite athletes, the conversation shifts from “How can we make you better?” to “How do we increase your value?” Trust me, there is a big difference between the two. We’ll explain.
Then, we look at what talent and value are going for in today’s sports market. The numbers are huge. We’ll look at the big money, who is getting it, and why big money does not necessarily mean results.
Also, as baseball gets underway, we want to make sure you are ready. Everyone other than the Major League Baseball players has missed an entire year of competition. The preparation for the upcoming season has to be much different than what we would normally do. I talk with Donovan Santas, Assistant Director of Player Health and Performance for the New York Yankees.
Finally, it’s time for the Krush Major League Baseball teams, players, and storylines to watch for 2021.
I’ll lay out who we are watching and why and there is NO shortage of things to watch as we head into the 2021 season.

Self Evaluation – If You Had One Word To Describe Yourself?
If you had one word to describe yourself, what would that word be?
Today we discuss why we are so bad at self-evaluation. We look at why it is so important to get this right and what you can do to make sure you are on the right track.
I dive into the Krush Mailbag to answer a fantastic question that came in from Jake: “If you had to choose the most important thing we need to address to get better, what would it be?”
Also, in today’s busy world, where do you find time to address athletic development? We look at what I feel is the most under utilized time in sport and how you can program it to not only improve sport performance but SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your risk of injury, you just have to get it right.

The Quest For Organizational Performance – Are You At Your Best?
What comes first in Organizational Performance?
We connect the dots on what may be one of the greatest “chicken and egg” scenarios in the performance world.
The culture and vision of the organization itself or is it the structure, strategy, and people who make it all happen?
It is a very important discussion. If you are looking to perform at our very best and to find out, we need to consider where organizational performance starts, what the components are that make it work, and how you can maintain top performance as a team or organization.
We’ll be joined by Jeff Tetz, CEO of Results, a company that helps organizations develop business strategies, leadership practices, and business plans for success. Jeff has a deep background in sport that he has crossed over to the business world. I recently met Jeff as he hosted a great webinar with Daniel Coyle, author of “The Talent Code & The Culture Code.”
“Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is a nightmare.” ~ Japanese Proverb
Join us as we connect the dots of organizational performance and look to discover just how good your organization can become. Just like we tell all of our athletes, we won’t really know until we go through the process.

Your Greatest Potential – The Brain Game
Your brain is kind of like a computer
The one area that holds the greatest potential for pushing your performance forward is the brain.
We have the hardware, the brain, the nervous system, the organs, and the feedback look that makes up the structure of the system.
The software, the attributes, and traits that make up the individual. Things like personality, attitude, decision making, approach, perception, or decision making, and many more.
Then, we have critical periods of development, neuroplasticity, and brain energetics…..how we learn!
We are in what may very well be one of the most exciting times in human development.
On this week’s episode I begin to put it all together by looking at how it all works and how we can influence this unseen part of human performance I’m calling it “The Brain Game” with Krush favorite clinical neuropsychologist and professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Martin Mrazik.

The Performance Plan
I have one question: How do we make you better?
If you are ready, let’s make today the day we start connecting the dots to figure it all out.
In this episode, I take you on as if you were one of our clients and introduce you to the Krush Performance Plan Process. This is the system we use to identify the best strategies to not only impact your performance right now but raise your ceiling of potential in the long game of performance development.
When we take on a client: an athlete, a team or an organization, we create a Performance Plan by working through a step by step process that gets everyone on the same page of understanding.
3 Key Measures:
- Understanding the true priorities for achieving top performance.
- Understanding where we are going and more importantly where we are at right now.
- Understanding of what needs to be done to impact your performance right now while at the same time raise your ceiling of potential moving forward
The Performance Plan Process is like planning a trip. I’ll discuss the importance of clearly defining your destination and even more importantly clearly understanding exactly where you are at right now.
So, if you are ready, let’s start getting answers to that all-important question: “How do we make you better?”

You Are Getting Sleepy….. Very, Very Sleepy
Sleep impacts impacts everything we do.
Are you getting enough sleep? How much sleep is enough sleep?
I talk with Krush favorite, Dr. Charles Samuels from the Center for Sleep & Human Performance. Get locked in as we discuss sleep strategies, sleep science and we look at the pros and cons of the sleep wearables, are they giving you the information you need? Also, we’ll take a very serious look at over-the-counter sleep aids, we fear that they greatly misunderstood and are being misused at an alarming rate.
Then, we look at sleep technology from another angle. Considering the amount of time we spend sleeping or resting in bed, we might as well be as comfortable as possible.
I have a question for you; Do you have the right mattress?
I talk with the Founder and CEO of Goodmorning.com, Sam Prochazka. We look at the very latest mattress technology, the new and innovative options that are now available and what you need to consider to find the right mattress for you. Choosing the right mattress is very specific to the individual we’ll help you get it right.
Let’s set you up for a good night’s sleep on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.
You are getting sleepy…..very, very sleepy.
