Talent Identification & The Pro Draft

Jul 07/ 2021/

Why is it so difficult to identify future performance? Despite all of the resources, time, and effort we really have not gotten that much better at it.
Athletes, coaches, GM’s, parents, and administrators this is a talent conversation you do not want to miss!
In this episode I talk with Lou Farah, Sport Researcher at York University, who has focused the majority of his research on the professional sports draft and athlete selection process, in particular the NHL draft.

What makes a great hockey player?
I want to get to a few major points in our Talent ID conversation with Lou for you.
We discuss:

• Where we are at in our understanding of talent and identifying future talent?
• Why have we historically been so poor at predicting future talent and performance?
• What are some of the things we need to think about to improve our ability to select and predict future performance?
• How important is it to select the right athlete/player into the right environment?
• How do the values of an organization steer the selection process?
• What are scouts really looking for as they evaluate talent?
• Are scouts focusing on the correct things or should we recalibrate what we find important in athlete selection and talent ID?
• Scouting may be one of the most difficult positions in all of sport, we’ll discuss why.

It is a jam-packed Talent ID episode of Krush Performance.
This is a conversation you do not want to miss.

Skill vs. Talent – There’s A Big Difference

Jun 24/ 2021/

What exactly is Talent? Why is it so difficult to predict future success? What is the difference between talent and skill? When it comes to talent and talent identification, there seem to be more questions than answers.

Talent and talent ID are one of our main themes for 2021 and this week, we dive into episode two of our “Talent Series” as I talk with Dr. Nima Dehghansai, Athlete Development and Talent ID Specialist with the Australian Paralympic Committee.
We dive down the talent rabbit hole to address some of the major questions revolving around our understanding of talent and talent ID and why we are struggling to make significant progress in our developmental and performance programs.

We will discuss:

  • Our current understanding of talent.
  • Talent transfer vs athlete transfer.
  • Talent vs skill – there is a big difference here and we need to make sure we are focusing on the correct things.
  • Developmental timelines
  • Critical periods of development
  • Supporting our coaches and coaching development
  • Skill acquisition specialists – providing perspective

We often say, “A problem accurately defined is already partially solved.” It is very, very difficult to solve a problem without a clear understanding of what that problem is.
Join us as we take a deep dive into our 2021 theme – Talent and Talent ID.
June 23: Episode #2: Skill vs Talent with Dr. Nima Dehghansai
June 30: Episode #3: Talent ID – The Draft and Scouting with Sports Researcher Lou Farah
July 7: Episode #4: Coaches Eye: Coach Decision making During Talent ID with Dr. Alex Roberts.

The Hockey Offseason – Like No Other!

Jun 21/ 2021/

Let’s get set for the return of sport! We are heading into what looks like a fairly regular summer and hopefully a normal sporting landscape this fall. In a normal year, for our hockey players, we would be well into our off-season training but we CANNOT treat this summer as if it were a normal off-season.

No matter what sport you play or compete in, what are the consequences of missing an entire competitive season?

We have never been through this before but we do know that we cannot treat this summer off-season as if it were normal.

This week on Krush Performance, we are discussing a strategy for attacking this hockey offseason and talk with Joel Jackson, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Competitive Thread. Joel just published a great article, “Movin’ On Up: Stair Conditioning for Hockey Players.” It is a great article looking at how stair training can be a great tool for hockey players. We’ll talk with Joel about cross-training and setting up your plan for this off-season.

Then, we will talk with Doug Crashley, Founder of Crash Conditioning. Doug and his team work with hockey players at all levels of the game. We will talk with Doug about the impact of missing an entire season and the importance of addressing both the athlete and the player as we get set for the upcoming season.

It’s a true performance episode of Krush Performance as we get set for the return of sport.

The Science Of Sweetness – Pt. 1

Jun 21/ 2021/

Everything we eat and drink influences our bodies in some way. No matter if it’s low fat, high fat, high protein, no protein, a carbohydrate, a sugar, an artificial sweetener, added sugar, no sugar, it doesn’t matter. There is a metabolic response and with each response, there is an impact, be it good or bad. Don’t you think it’s time we better understood what that impact might be?
That is what our Science of Sweetness Series is all about and it is also the mission and the passion of the Brix Glycemic Impact Research & Science Institute.

This week on Krush Performance, the #KrushWarOnSugar continues with Episode #1 of #TheScienceOfSweetness. For each episode, we will be joined by Krush Hall of Famer Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research at the Glycemic Research Institute.
Each month, we will dedicate an entire episode to our Science of Sweetness Series where we will be investigating and attacking some of the most important questions concerning the foods we eat and how they impact our bodies our brains and our performance.

Let the adventure begin!

If you have any questions along the way about the Science of Sweetness or if you have something you’d like us to address, let us know! Write to us at info@krushperformance.

The Krush Brain Game – Perception & Reality

Jun 21/ 2021/

There are over 100 billion neurons in the human brain all working away to make us who we are. While we are just scratching the surface in our understanding of how the brain really works, we could be on the very doorstep of some of the most exciting discoveries ever made.

This week on Krush Performance, its Episode 4 of “The Krush Brain Game” as we discuss the process of perception and how it impacts our learning, our development and our performance.
What if we could turn parts of our brain off? Wouldn’t it then make sense that we could possibly turn parts on?

We talk with Dr. Mayak Mehta, Professor and Researcher at the UCLA Department of Neurology, The Department of Physics and Astronomy, and The Department of Electronic and Communication Engineering, about all of this and how virtual reality may very well turn out to be the porthole to the Brain.

It is a powerful episode of the Krush Brian Game. Pass it on, share it, and let’s all work to get a little bit better.

Sleep & The Brain – Recovery, Regeneration & Storing Your Memories and Information

Jun 16/ 2021/

Sleep is one of the most powerful influencers on your brain function and health. You may think you are resting but when you sleep your brain is in a hyper mode repairing itself, building memories, getting rid of the garbage, and locking in the important stuff, reinforcing learning, and clearing toxins and waste.

Considering we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, sleep quickly becomes a key player in the Krush Brain Game!

This week on Krush Performance, I talk with Krush favorite, Dr. Charles Samuels of the Center for Sleep and Human Performance. We discuss:

  • sleep science
  • keys to getting good sleep
  • the impact of broken sleep
  • and the importance of for the brain

If we have one piece of advice for every single one of you Krushers out there: Protect Your Sleep!
The Krush Brain Game….. Where do the Brain and everything that it entails fit into the developmental model for sports performance for human performance?

Draft Day & Talent Identification

May 19/ 2021/

“A day where Lives are changed, Fates are decided, Dynasties are born, and the clock is always ticking…. of course, I’m talking about Draft Day.”
The NFL Draft has just wrapped up: 32 teams, 7 rounds, 224 picks for the top players available in the football market. I love everything about it BUT are the very best players being selected in the Draft? In any draft? In any sport?
How good are we at identifying current talent? How good are we at predicting future talent?
The answer is not good. Not good at all. For example, here are some numbers from the NFL.
Of the players that took the field in 2020:

• 13 percent were first-rounders.
• 21 percent were drafted in the second and third.
• 66 percent were selected in the fourth or later.

So, as exciting as it is to be drafted early, it does not necessarily mean you will play, prosper, or have continued success.
I mean, Tom Brady went in the 6th round, 199th overall, and one of my all-time favorite players Bo Jackson went in the 7th round, he was the 183rd pick. Both had incredible, storied careers, we still don’t truly know the true depths of Brady’s greatness.

In this week’s episode of Krush Performance, we take a look at some of the top performers in sport to decide what makes them special. We’ll break down the numbers when it comes to draft day and we’ll compare some of the numbers from the major sports.
Then, we ask, “What makes great players great?” I’ve got some ideas on this that I would like to share with you, lets see if you agree.
It’s Draft Day and Talent ID & Development this week on Krush Performance.

Spring Sport, Incredible Feats, & Krushing Injury

May 04/ 2021/

Broken, Broken, Broken…
Injury rates are on the rise, we look at why and how you can stay healthy.

This week on Krush Performance, we attack a Twitter question that came in from a loyal Krush follower:
“Hey @JeffKrush, kids are so competitive now, always training, are you seeing more of these types of injuries in younger players? The forces in a pitcher’s arm, skating, or the butterfly goalie movement, are unique to most sports. Does early physical literacy help these sports?”
It is an important question that leads to an important conversation. We break it down.

As spring sport rolls on, we take a look at the 2021 Krush Watchlist and what we have learned from the teams, players, and storylines coming out of professional sport. Humbly, we are kicking ass with our watch-list picks so far this year.
Also, we reset our 2021 themes, the Krush Brain Game and Talent and Talent ID, and the return of the Krush War on Sugar.
We have some seriously great performance content coming up so get set to simply get better right here on Krush Performance.
