The Fastest Changing Sport Ever

Feb 18/ 2020/

The Con Man and I kick this week’s show off with our good pal Tom Gazzola, NHL Network Correspondent and TSN host, talking NHL suspensions, Jay Bouwmeester’s scary cardiac episode, and the impact of MLB’s sign stealing incident, could the damage run deeper than we think?
Have we ever witnessed a sport change as much as the game of baseball? We look at the numbers and you may be surprised.
Then, we talk injuries, injury prevention, and getting ready for the baseball season with Will Gilmore, Rehab, Strength, and Conditioning Coordinator for the Cincinnati Reds. What is the best exercise for your hamstrings? We will tell you.
Also, we are going to answer some e-mails and texts. We had some great questions from last week’s show and we’ll share some of the numbers on early sport specialization. If you think specializing early works in your favor think again, the data tells a very different story.

Raising Potential – The Long Game of Maximizing Sport Performance

Feb 13/ 2020/

Raising the potential of an athlete is a long game. There are NO short cuts!
Athlete and player development, when done correctly, you can get the best of both world – short term gains that push future performance upward. If done incorrectly, you may get some immediate performance gains but you run the great risk of sacrificing future potential, increasing the risk of injury, burnout and athlete dropout from organized sport.
The information and data surrounding talent development, performance, and long-term planning is all out there and available for anyone who is interested in truly finding out how good they can really become. Athlete and player training is all about preparing an individual for the next phase of development.
We start by clearly understanding where the athlete is currently at, how they respond to training, and all of the unique factors that influence progressive development.
In this week’s episode of Krush Performance, we are talking raising potential and how you can plan for the long game of athlete and player development.

Pro Nutrition, The Krush War on Sugar, & Super Bowl Chow-Down

Feb 05/ 2020/

It’s Superbowl weekend! A great time to talk performance nutrition as we set up our 2020 Krush War on Sugar. We’ll take a look at what we are eating on the second biggest food day of the year just behind Thanksgiving….Super Bowl Sunday. How many billion wings? How many million gallons of beer? We’ll hit on it all.
This week, we talk pro nutrition with Ricky Ng, Performance Nutrition Director for the Las Vegas Raiders. We discuss the challenges of feeding an NFL roster, the importance of getting to know the players and how the pros are planning their feedings. We’ll talk to Ricky about the dangers of fad diets for athletes, hydration, and of course, we have to ask how the Raiders move to Las Vegas is coming along.

Also, we set up our 2020 Krush War on Sugar campaign with a review of what we know and what we need to be aware of when it comes to sugar in our diets.
Finally, we ask the question: In your opinion, what is the best sporting event on the sport calendar?

The importance of Exercise…..Has the fountain of youth been hiding in plain sight? We talk with Michele Nesbitt, National Fitness Director of Orangetheory Fitness.
Also, things are making a little more sense as Larry Walker joins Jeter in Major League Ball’s Hall of Fame. We talk with Greg Hamilton, Head Coach and Director of National Teams for Baseball Canada, about the impact Larry Walker has had on the game of baseball and what it means to Canada to have their second player inducted into the Hall.

Krushing The New Year

Jan 08/ 2020/

Happy New Year to All! First off, I’d like to personally thank all of our listeners, sponsors, partners and guests for making Krush Performance one of the top performance podcasts in the world. There is nothing quite like doing something you love, helping others, and having some fun along the way. 2020 is going to be an epic year here at Krush Performance and we’d can wait to get after it.
On this week’s episode, we set up our Performance Plan for 2020. We have three major themes that we will be attaching in 2020 along with all of the other great research, storylines, and Krush Stuff that we love.
Our three major themes for 2020 are:

  • Organizational Performance
  • Specialization in Sport
  • The Krush War on Sugar #KrushWARonSUGAR

So, on this week’s episode, we go back to two of the most powerful interviews from 2019 that help set up our assault on 2020.
For organizational performance, we go back to our incredible conversation with James Kerr, author of “Legacy: What the All Black can Teach us About the Business of Life.” One of my favorite books and a Krush “Must Read”. I could not wait to talk with James about his experiences with the All Black who may very well be the most successful sporting organization in all of sport.
Then, in the spirit of addressing specialization, the dangers and downside of doing more, and doing too much too soon, we go back to a conversation with Krush Favorite Dr. Joe Baker, Sport Scientist at York University, as we lay out the issues, the dangers and the opportunities for those who really want to make a difference for our athletes.
So, here we go!!! Let’s wrap up 2019 and attack 2020 full speed.

Nutrition Strategies

Jan 08/ 2020/

This week, we are talking nutrition top to bottom! Nutrition, weight control, and dieting are hot topics as we head into the holiday season so this week, let’s get ahead of the game and talk Nutrition and Nutrition Strategies with Brian St. Pierre of Precision Nutrition and look at the Precision approach to performance eating for sport, business, school and life in general.
There is no escaping poor nutrition. It affects everything you do and the implications in the areas of health and wellness are as important as they are with our performance athletes.
What if I told you that diet and weight related diseases have taken over from smoking as the number one preventable causes of death. With more than 2/3rds of the population dealing with weight management issues, you would think we’d have it all figured out but with everything we know, we are still trending in the wrong direction. That’s very concerning when you consider that the North American weight loss industry generates BILLIONS of dollars a/year.
So, what can you do:
First, exercise regularly. It’s a critical component for overall health but when it comes to making a difference in your weight, exercise is a distant second to diet choices.
Exercise can only influence 20% of your overall modifiable weight whereas your diet and daily diet choices influence the other 80%.
So, let’s start to get your nutrition right on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.
