Understanding Talent With Dr. Joe Baker
Our understanding of talent is still in its infancy. Heck, we can’t even agree on a working definition of talent. Talent, talent development, and talent ID make up one of our main themes for 2021 and today, we kick it off with Krush Favorite, Dr. Joe Baker, Sport Science Researcher from York University.
When we consider Talent, there are so many components involved that it can seem overwhelming.
Here are 8 well-defined components of talent:
• The influence of genetics
• The influence of the environment
• Coaching & Teaching Techniques
• Constraints Led Approach
• Dynamic System Theory
• Implicit & Explicit Learning
• Specialization
• Sampling
The list goes on and on and on.
We are taking 2021 to dissect talent, to take it apart, lay it all out, put it back together, and make some sense of it so we can move forward with purpose, understanding, and direction.
No matter if you are in grassroots development or performing at the top of the world stage, we simply ask:
“How do we make you better?”
Get set everyone. It is going to be a fantastic year here at Krush Performance and we kick it off our look into the world of talent right now.

The Future Of Health & Performance w/Dr. Ann de Wees Allen
The Krush War On Sugar rages on! We want to reset and get a clear idea of where we are really at in terms of the landscape when it comes to sugar, our diet, and our state of health. There is a missing link when it comes to our understanding of how the foods and fuel we consume really react with our bodies. Once it goes in, what really happens? Could this be where we are really missing the boat not just for our health but also for our performance?
This week, we try to clear the air because what we have been doing up to now has NOT been working! Obesity, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and all of the health issues associated with these conditions continue to rise.
For our athletes and their performance, there are exciting new breakthroughs that may allow our athletes to achieve at a higher level each and every day.
Let’s turn the page and enter the new era of human performance and health when it comes to the food we eat and our understanding of how it reacts and interacts with our bodies with Krush Hall of Famer Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research at the Glycemic Research Institute, Washington DC.
We discuss:
• Brain energetics
• Fuel Partitioning
• The brain/body Axis
• And finally, how Burn Rate Analysis may be the path to better health and better performance
Be sure to reach out! We look forward to your questions, comments, and smart-ass remarks.
Please share the show and join our quest to better understand what it truly takes to achieve human maximum performance.

The Interesting, The Historic, & The Confusing
Could there be a massive downside to big data, analytics, and statistics? The numbers are impacting the sports we love and perhaps not for the better. They are impacting not only how we play sports but how we are developing athletes.
Today, we look at some of the storylines coming out of Major League Baseball:
The Interesting: Theo Epstein stepping down from the Cubs and his comments on the impact of analytics.
The Historic: Marlins Hire Kim Ng – the first female GM.
The Confusing: Robinson Cano….WHY?????
We also dive into international sport as the World Junior Hockey Championships get set to kick off in Edmonton. Could there be implications for the 2021 Olympic Games here?
We’ll take a look at the Krush NFL Teams to watch this year. How are they rating and are there any surprises as we head into the Thanksgiving weekend?
Finally, we share the results of our Brain Game audience Poll. We asked should “The Brain” be one of the top priorities for setting our athletes up for future success? The Results are not what I thought they would be.
It’s a jam-packed Thanksgiving Episode of Krush Performance.

The Case Against Sugar
Now, more than ever, we need to address the growing rates of obesity and overweight and all the health risks associated with them.
This newfound urgency is largely driven by research associated with the COVID pandemic. Research indicates people who are overweight, obese, or have one or more preventable chronic diseases are more susceptible to the deadly effects of COVID infection.
Also:
In Mexico, new bans on selling junk food to anyone under 18 without a parent present.
In the U.S., new dietary guidelines take aim at daily sugar consumption for both children and adults.
On this episode of the Krush Performance War On Sugar, we talk with Gary Taubes, investigative science and health journalist, speaker, and author.
You may know Gary from his many published articles, his appearances on network newscasts or his contributions to the powerful Krush must-watch documentaries, “Fat” and “Sugar Coated.” Gary has followed the sugar industry and the impact sugar has had on our health for decades. His perspective and knowledge are a critical piece for understanding the true issues surrounding sugar in our diets.
Knowledge is POWER – Action is POWERFUL
Get set for one of the most important episodes of the Krush War On Sugar to date as we look at the history of the sugar industry and how we have arrived at this tipping point in human health.
It’s time to act. Save your health. Save your children’s health and for our athletes save your performance.

The Krush Brain Game (Pt. 6)
The brain may very well hold the greatest potential for moving human performance forward. It is one of – if not THE – most complex organisms in our known universe. It is like Mission Control for everything we do. So how do we go about getting control of our brain, our thoughts, our emotions, and ultimately our performance?
In our special series titled “The Krush Brain Game,” we have been digging down deep trying to get a better idea of what brain performance is all about and how to define “the brain” in terms of human performance.
We know the brain is a huge piece of the performance puzzle and new advances in technology are not only allowing us to map and track brain performance like never before but also allowing us to train the brain – IN REAL TIME and in ways that we have NEVER been able to until recently.
This week, we talk with Lawrence Kline, Co-Founder and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Thought Technology.
Founded in 1975, Thought Technology is the world’s leading biofeedback, neurofeedback, and psychophysiological instrument manufacturer. Thought Technology has pushed the industry to new heights, and they are about to announce some very, exciting new health and performance initiatives as they continue to set the standard and raise the bar in human performance.
This week’s episode wraps up “The Krush Brain Game” Series. However, we have just scratched the surface when it comes to the Brain Game, we will be revisiting the discussion moving forward.
I would like to send out a special thanks to Lawrence for his support and the sharing of his contacts as we put together our Brain Game Series. From our very first conversation, I could tell we shared a passion for sport, for performance, and for helping people. Many thanks, Lawrence. I look forward to many more fascinating phone conversations.
I would also like to thank Carol Meyers, the General manager at the Biofeedback Federation of Europe. She has been an incredible supporter of our “Brain Game” series.
Finally, many thanks to the incredible “Krush Brain Game” guests who came on the show to share their knowledge, insights, and years of experience so we could all get a better understanding of where we are at and where we are going when it comes to brain performance and the mental game:
• Dr. Martin Mrazik: Clinical Neuro Psychologist & Professor at the University of Alberta
• Dr. Erik Peper: President of the Biofeedback Federation of Europe & Professor at San Francisco State University
• Dr. Inna Khazan: Clinical Psychologist – Harvard Medical School & Founder of the Boston Center for Health, Psychology, and Biofeedback
• Lucas Borgo: Product Manager at Thought Technology – Performance Products
• Bob Tewksbury: Certified Mental Performance Consultant & Former MLB pitcher of 18 years.
• Lawrence Kline: Co-Founder of Thought Technology and Vice-Chairman of the Board.
• YOU, the Krush Audience: You are the reason we do what we do and why we continue to push ourselves to be better so we can help inspire, motivate and educate all who will listen.
I look forward to your continued questions, comments, and smart remarks. Please share the show and join our quest in finding top performance for all.
Have a fun and safe Halloween Weekend.

The Krush Brain Game (Pt. 5)
Yogi Berra once said, “Baseball is 90% mental, and the other half is physical.” I always smile when I see or hear a Yogi quote but this one hits home, especially as we dig into our Brain Game Series.
90% mental would have been a great alternative name for the series because once we have the physical side of development set up and rolling and we start to develop skills and talent the mental side of the development is a critical player if we are going to truly tap into the potential.
What is the Mental Game? How is it different from the Brain Game? Is it different or are they one and the same?
Today, we talk with Bob Tewksbury, Certified Mental Performance Consultant. Former athlete, Bob pitched 18 years in professional baseball, Yankees, Cubs, Cardinals… and his experience in sport provides a unique perspective on the mental side of performance.
“90% Mental,” by the way, is the title of Bob’s latest book. We’ll dig into that this week as well as we discuss simple yet powerful strategies that you can use to improve your performance right now and set you up with confidence as you move forward.
It’s a very practical look at the Brain Game as we discuss the mental side of sport performance on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.
