The Sugar Conspiracy

Jan 05/ 2017/

Are we at the biological ceiling of human performance?

We have a great understanding when it comes to the physical development side of human performance: faster, higher, stronger. No problem! So, where are the next major break throughs going to come from?

We talk with Dr. Jon Kolb, the Director of Sport Science, Medicine, and Innovation for Own The Podium Program in Canada, and look at how they are focusing and utilizing the sport sciences to help their athletes compete on the world stage.

Then, the Krush War on Sugar continues with a segment looking at “The Sugar Conspiracy,” a great article by author and journalist, Ian Leslie. We look back on the history of sugar in our diet and how early warnings regarding the dangers of consuming too much sugar in our diets were ignored, shunned, and swept under the rug only to resurface decades later with serious science that indicates that for many it may be too late.

This is an important episode of Krush Performance as we address two of our passions: Human Maximum Performance and The Krush War on Sugar!

Make sure to share this show with everyone you know as we work to spread the good word and help you truly understand what it’s like to think like an athlete.

The War on Drugs in Sport & Injury Prevention

Nov 22/ 2016/

In this episode of Krush Performance we have a look at where we are at in the war on drugs in sport as we speak with Olivier Niggli Director General of WADA to see what has happened since the fiasco leading up to Rio and the aftermath – that brought WADA under fire.
WADA has since hosted a very important think tank meeting and we’ll see where the Sporting World is at in terms of supporting the sport anti doping governing body.

Also, the 2017 Prohibited List is out – who is responsible in the end for what goes into an athlete’s body?
The Athlete most certainly but the entire performance team has to be on the ball as well.
And How Safe are Supplements, what is WADA’s stance on supplements.

It’s predicted the sport supplement industry will generate close to $55bilion by 2020 the entire dietary supplement industry is projected to reach a staggering $278 Billion by 2024.
But it’s a dangerous and vastly unregulated injury so we caution all athletes to proceed with Extreme Caution in obtaining and using sport supplements.

The Krush Performance Question of the Day: Are we doing enough in the fight on drugs in sport?

And later in the show we’ll have a look at injury prevention in sport and how Yoga is not only having an impact on reducing injuries but WHEN done right – it can improve performance.

We will be joined by Yoga Master Dana Santas of MobilityMaker.com to discuss how her program and yoga in general is becoming a major part of sport performance programs.

Go have fun fill up those candy bags that’s what Halloween is all about.

We’ll talk about what we should be doing the rest of the year and look at a fantastic new corporate health & Wellness program.

Is there an upside or downside of a sugar tax as the Halloween season is now upon us.

Halloween is an industry unto itself how much money do you think is spent each year on Halloween.
It’s a MASSIVE number and we’ll let you know in this War on Sugar Episode of Krush Performance.

Krush Top 5 Things to Watch this NHL Season

Oct 27/ 2016/

We try to get this in at the start of every professional season and today we are going to kick off the NHL season with our list of teams & players to watch this season.

The list is not necessarily based on who is going to win, though we may make a call for what its worth, but there are so many great story lines and a lot to learn about elite performance by just watching the pro’s perform.

At the start of the MLB season our “things to watch” list went very well this year.

The Cubs were #1 on my watch list this season Joe Maddon / Theo Epstein were the big attraction there. The KC Royals, could they repeat and GM Dayton Moore has rebuilt that organization can they perform again this season? The Jays, NY & A-Rod and the Astros with their big acquisitions & talented young players were all on our list.

BUT, to show you just how much sport is the real Reality TV – unscripted – unplanned and for the most part unpredictable – Cleveland was nowhere on my radar!! Incredible! What a run for Cleveland this year.

So the Krush Question of the day, in light of our topic of “What to watch this NHL season”, What do you think is the most important factor in determining organizational?
Some things come to mind: Past Success – Talent – Culture – Depth – Development – Coaching – Ownership- GM ……. What do you think?

Maybe you throw out a couple of things but if you were to choose, what do you think is the most important factor in organizational success?

Controlling your Brain & Helping Kids Perform

Oct 27/ 2016/

On this episode of Krush Performance, a major performance discussion as we look into the mental game of human performance and supporting the development of our most precious commodity, our Kids.
Many professional organizations are now looking for new and innovative methods for pushing player and employee performance to new levels and information technology may just be the big break through that takes human performance to the next level.

We have a very good grip on the physical side of training and Development.
In our performance programs our priorities for every athlete and organization we work with are as follows:
– Rest & Recovery & Sleep
– Nutrition / Hydration
– Posture and ROM
– Then for our athletes movement for everyone else task specific training.

Once all of this is set we can then start looking at the performance side of development.
WAY too often athletes, parents, coaches want to skip steps and jump way ahead of where they are at and I can promise you this its virtually impossible to reach your true potential if you hop over critical developmental steps.

Sometimes focusing on long term benefits means taking a step back, even a couple of steps in order to rebuild and move forward towards a bright, bright future…..

So as we have a grip on the physical side – stronger, powerful, speed, agility, skill development, there is emerging new technology that is now allowing us to tap into and train one of the most elusive aspects of human performance – The MIND.

On this episode we talk with Registered Psychologist John Stevenson of Zone Performance about information technology that provides real time feedback on how your mind is operating.

Yes, you can actually now see how well your brain is operating while performing a task and with the feedback learn how to better control it.

It has been around for awhile but the science is being refined and what we can now do & see is incredible – and incredibly powerful when it comes to human performance – in sport business, school & life in general.

Later in the Show, are you teaching your kids the right stuff – we have a very important conversation with Dr. Jaques Dallaire – about his book Helping Kids Perform: Mental Skills that every Parent, Teacher and Coach should master.
It’s time to break the cycle and push into the new age.

Share this show with everyone you know who is looking to get better at what they do, these are two important conversations.

GRIT: The Power of Passion & Perseverance with Angela Duckworth

Oct 13/ 2016/

In this show we are talking GRIT & the intangibles.  Those invisible traits that exist and play an important roll in making us who we are.
What is the most important piece of the puzzle when we look to identify & evaluate talent or potential?
Experience – the body of work?
Skill Evaluation – things like a NHL or NFL combine performance or entrance exam?
Talent & Skill – “in” game evaluation/scouting reports or work reviews?

In sport, you can see what an athlete is capable of while playing in the present setting or via player evaluations like a combine or try out.
In work or school, you can get references, interview peers, bosses and teachers (we do the same in sport).

In fact there is now as much work going into back ground checks (not just the criminal kind) as there are on skill evaluation and there are times when the value of a person’s intangible traits precede their skill level as teams and organizations try to decide if an athlete, student or employee is right for their organization.
We have a really good idea how to develop skill sets and physical ability but the intangibles a person possesses seem set in stone.

But….. what if I told you that we all have the ability to train, develop and master the intangibles!
What if I told you the intangibles are trainable?
And this is where today’s conversation comes in.

The intangibles – those things that exist behind the curtain – the traits that make us who we are.
Some call it Character – but I think it is much more than that.

It’s aggressiveness, patience or self-control. It’s compete levels, intelligence, coach ability it’s perseverance, mind set & GRIT…….

In this show I’m joined by Angela Duckworth Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania – Scientific director of the Character Lab and Author of the Bestseller ‘GRIT: The Power of Passion & Perseverance’
We’ll discuss:
What exactly is Character?
Is GRIT the Character Trait that Trumps all others?
And, how GRIT Trumps Talent and IQ when it comes to success.

I look forward to your comments & if you like what you hear please pass this on to everyone you know. It’s an important conversation.
Thanks,

Managing Player Performance – Short Term & Long Term Planning

Oct 05/ 2016/

On this show, I talk with NHL certified player agent Manny Schmidt of Link Management International.
We look at everything that impacts a player’s preparation and in game performance. There is a lot to consider. For example, take the Taylor Hall trade this summer or any player move for that matter. What does a player have to go through in an organizational change? Change of home, city, coach, teammates….the list goes on.
With any player move, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that the team, the agent, and the player have to work diligently to limit distraction and allow the player to focus on training & competing.
What about moves in the minor leagues of professional sport? As players move up, move down, get released and then resign, there can be a real yo-yo effect and that doesn’t even include the travel inside of the competitive schedule.
Just imagine changing teams several time in a season. How do you maintain game performance?
It’s not always the best idea to play up. Too many times, we have seen young players moved up to only sit or fail. There is nothing wrong with being a stud and mastering the game at the level you are at.
Today, we’ll look at when the right time is to move up, to play up , and how to know if you are ready.
