Concussions-Are we doing enough to keep athletes safe?
What do you need to know when it comes to head injuries & concussions in sport?
As NFL preseason games get underway, college & high school sports are right around the corner, and we hear the rumblings of preseason NHL, I wanted to revisit head injuries and concussions to see where we are at in our understanding of this complicated injury and based on what we now know, what have we done to improve players safety?
I’m joined in studio by Dr. Martin Mrazik of the University of Alberta.
We discuss his roll in an innovative concussion research project taking place in the Canadian Football League that is funded by the NFL and the National Institutes of Health.
And we look at what we now know about concussions and brain injuries and based on what we now know, have we done enough to improve player safety:
• Ban on body checking in minor hockey
• Limit on contact in football practice
• Ban on heading in minor league soccer
Do we totally eliminate high school football? It is currently a serious discussion!
How far do we go in regulating who competes and who does not as we discuss the fatal boxing match of mixed martial artist Tim Hauge.
Should he have been in the ring? Who should be making the final decision?
As always, thanks for listening!

MLB – Big Money = Big Results???
I wonder….really wonder….Does big money equal big results?
It makes sense to think that big money should correlate to big results but it does not always work out that way. In fact, it’s not even close.
As Major League Baseball has its sights aimed at generating $15 billion of revenue per year, it is predicted to crack the $10 billion mark here in 2017. The 30 Major League Baseball teams employ 750 big league players at any given time. Since 2006, the players share of total revenue lands somewhere between 48 and 51%.
This year total team payrolls exceed the $4 billion mark but does the money mean results?
Let’s take a look. We are going to break down the standings and consider each team’s payrolls.
We go back to an early season talk with Alex Anthopoulos. the VP of baseball Operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and we’ll look at the top ways that you can avoid injury and improve your performance.
The National Football League’s Big Data Debate
Is there a dark side to collecting personal data in sport?
Wearable technology has advanced very fast in a very short time and the information we are now able to access and record is mind boggling. In sport, it is typically used to help monitor a players health and state of readiness and recovery but could this very same data be used against the player?
Who owns the data? What is the value of this data? Is it for sale?
We talk with Sports Illustrated reporter and researcher Tom Taylor about his latest article, “Football’s Next Frontier – The Battle Over Big Data.”
The NFLPA has signed a 5 year deal with technology company Whoop and what they are planning to do with the data is very interesting!
AIU- Ground Breaking Development in Sport with David Howman
The IAAF needed to do something bold to reset and regain the public trust and it has done so becoming the first international sporting organization to delegate complete authority for the management of it’s integrity programs to an independent body, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
The AIU will be responsible for over seeing anti doping, bribery & match fixing, age manipulation and other areas including athlete education all in an attempt to combat threats to the integrity of the sport.
This week, we are joined by the AIU Chair, David Howman, to get an inside look at this ground breaking move. We discuss what it may mean for the future of athletics and the impact it may have on sport in general.

Grit & Perseverance – The Story of MLB’s First African Born Player, Gift Ngoepe
Where do great players come from? What does it really take to chase down the dream of becoming a professional athlete?
Gift Ngoepe grew up with his mother and two brothers in a 7 by 9 room in the clubhouse of the Randburg Mets Baseball Club outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. It was here that he found his passion for the game of baseball. No one ever would’ve nor could’ve imagined that this African youth would go on to become the first African born Major League Baseball player.
This week, we find out what it really takes to chase down a dream as we talk with Gift Ngoepe about his journey to becoming the first African born player to play Major League Baseball. We talk to Gift about his journey, the people that helped along the way, and what it was like to step on to a Major League field for the first time as a Pittsburgh Pirate.
It is an incredible story of grit, perseverance and determination and it’s a story everyone should hear.
This is an episode you will want to share with family, friends, teammates and co-workers.
The Process of Development & The Power of Good Coaching
Development is a process and it involves more common sense than you might realize.
In this fast paced “peak by Friday” approach that has taken developmental sport by storm, have we actually taken a step backwards? Dropout rates are up, injuries are up, and burn out is common place.
I have very little doubt that there is plenty of greatness out there just waiting to be exposed but I fear we have taken the wrong fork in the developmental road. We may be destroying more talent than we are creating!
This episode on Krush Performance, we talk player development with Rick Knapp, the pitching consultant/coordinator for Major League Baseball International. He shares his insights on player development, kids getting good coaching, and how the common sense approach makes sense.
There is plenty of wisdom and food for thought in the jam packed conversation and it’s applications go well beyond baseball.
