Questions, Talent Development, & Fixing The NCAA

Nov 05/ 2018/

This week on Krush Performance, I’m joined in studio by a couple of our good friends, Brennan Klak and Matt Iwanyk, asking the question, “What sport has changed the most in recent years?”
We also talk skill acquisition and talent development. How do you get better at something? It’s all based around Matt’s golf game and the goals he has set for himself over the next three years.
Also, Brennan and I attempt to fix the NCAA. The on-field and on-court product is as good as ever but there are demons haunting the NCAA, such as their antiquated rules. Could it be time to pay the players?

Dealing with Change & Transitions with Jim Fannin

Oct 24/ 2018/

The fall season rolls on and the fall is by far my favorite time of year. The cool air, warm sun, turning of the leaves and lots of SPORTS! NFL, NHL, MLB Postseason, MLS, College Football, and the NBA are now underway and it is a full plate of fall sport that we are watching with great interest.
Today, we look at the NBA Krush Style, to nail down which teams we are watching and why, which players we are following and the storylines in the league. There is plenty to learn from professional sport and there are some very intriguing things happening in the Association this year.
Also, everyone will have to deal with change and/or transition at some point in life. Some changes are planned like going to college, marriage, applying for a new job while others are forced or come as a surprise, such as an injury, the passing of family or friends, or getting let go from a job.
Today, I talk with Krush Favorite Jim Fannin, “The Coach of Champions,” to talk about strategies for dealing with change and transition.
Dealing with change can be very difficult and I hope this episode helps out as many people as possible, it was an important conversation for me personally as I have been dealing with some major challenges and transitions myself.

Talking to Shane Fennessey, co-producer of “Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story.”

Oct 16/ 2018/

We always have our ear to the ground, constantly looking for things that peak our interest or grab our attention. Last week, I picked up on two really cool events and I wanted to share them with the Krush Community.
First, anytime we have an opportunity to get a peek behind the curtains of a great performer we take it! To get insights as to what makes a great performer tick is always important and once in a while, we get a glimpse into the life of a Top Performer, which is an invaluable opportunity to not only see how the performer operates but how the performance/life balance can challenge even the very best.
This week, we get a very special opportunity as we talk with Shane Fennessey, co-producer of “Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story.” Grant Fuhr was the first black superstar in hockey. He transformed the position of goaltender winning 403 regular season games, 5 Stanley Cups, and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. It’s an incredible career on the ice, a fall from grace, and a return to the spotlight for redemption. We get a look at this incredible story and the making of the film.
Also, on the athlete performance side, some of the greatest minds in sport medicine are gathering in Edmonton, Alberta for the 5th annual David C. Reid / Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic Conference to discuss issues of the lower limb. We are joined by Enda King, physiotherapist and Head of Performance Rehabilitation at the Sports Surgery Clinic, Ireland. We talk with Enda about Injury prevention, rehabilitation and making the right return to play decisions.
I hope you enjoy this episode, please share it with your teammates, family and friends.

Sugar & Sports Drinks- Can All Sugars be Used as Energy & Fuel??

Oct 10/ 2018/

We know that in order to solve a problem, you need to clearly define the problem.
This week, we take a look at how much sugar we are really consuming, where it’s all coming from. We talk with Krush Favorite Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research with the Glycemic Research Institute, about our new understanding of how our bodies really work when it comes to the food we eat.
Burnable carbs, targeted nutrition and No, once again, a Calorie is NOT a calorie.

The Puzzle Of Motivation

Sep 18/ 2018/

It is a great time of year as schedules get back on track, school returns, the world of sport is hopping, and fall is almost upon us. It’s a time to regroup, refocus, and steel your mind on the things that you need to do in order to reach your goals and objectives.
Today, I look at one of the mysteries of Human Performance: Motivation.
I go to one of the top Krush Conversations as I talked with Dan Pink about his book “Drive,” his TED talk, “The Puzzle of Motivation,” and his research on the mismatch between what science knows and what organizations do when it comes to motivation.
What motivates us to do what we do? How can we find and tap into the motivation needed to chase down our dreams. It’s not always easy.
Also, I work to fulfill my promise of outlining the Krush Performance Top Priorities for Human Performance. If you listen to the show, you have heard this before but I plan to go a little deeper as we work to set you up for your attack on whatever it is you are working towards.

Athlete Transitions & What To Watch In The NFL

Sep 11/ 2018/

This is by far my favorite time of year with so much going on in the world of Top Performance. Both College and High School are back in action, MLB post season races, rumblings from the NHL and NBA, the NFL kicked off the 2018-19 season.
This week, I look at what teams and players to watch and what can we learn from the top performing teams and I ask the Con Man, “Why the Chargers???”
As athletes make their way through and move up the ranks of the sporting system, I look at what some of the biggest challenges athletes face as they transition from one level of sport to the next.
I talk with mental performance consultant and the 2017 Canadian Sport Psychology Association: Young Professional of the Year, Joshua Hoetmer, about stress and coping strategies athletes, parents and coaches can use to help athlete transition go smoother.

Hot Topics In The News- Doping Will Always Happen in the Olympics – What can be done?

Sep 07/ 2018/

This week  I look back on a summer of great guests and great conversations. There were a couple that really stirred up the pot and I’ll revisit those conversations today. In the news, there have been a couple of story lines that have caught my eye recently and I will expand on them today.
First, an interview with Thomas Bach, the President of the IOC, who comments on their ambitious strategic road map for the future and their attempts to create a more feasible and sustainable Olympic Games. On the topic of doping in sport, Bach says “doping will always happen” and it’s “one of the wars you cannot win.” Also, are eSports worthy of being an Olympic event?
MLB has agreed to a ground breaking partnership with trainers and agents in Latin America. What does this mean for player development and how might this impact other sports? I expand on this and share my thoughts.
Finally, we look at some of the responses to our question that has been going out to all coaches: What are the top five things you would like to learn to help you better coach your players right now? If you are a coach, send us your list (info@krushperformance.com) as we get set for our fall coaching development series.
