I’m Worried About Your Potential
Is it possible that we are destroying more talent than we are creating? Hard YES from me.
I just returned from a great trip to an Elite Baseball Academy and I was taken back by a meeting I had with an upcoming 14 year old. I was impressed more than anything, his approach preparation and the game itself were beyond his years, his work ethic and dedication cannot be questioned but I was taken back by where he thought he should be as a 14 year old player. Should he be competing with players 2-3-4 years older than he is? Is the pressure on to be a complete and finished player, hitting the ball hard, covering more ground throwing harder and more often. NO. NO. And NO!
We are putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to be better or be more and to do it all right now. Development, skill, and talent acquisition are all part of a long game.
A 14 year ball player old does not have to worry about being a polished finished player – he won’t get his shot at the big leagues until his early 20s… nine years away.
Develop, get better and most of all, have FUN! We talk about it on this episode.
Also, I caught a great article in The Athletic by our good friend, Allan Mitchell. The article broke down Connor McDavid’s performance contributions to the Edmonton Oliers. The number BLEW ME AWAY and it got me thinking about the power of one player & the importance of talent!!
We have a great discussion regarding this with Al and we ask the Krush Question of the Day:
Who is the Greatest Impact Team Player of All Time?

What Were You Thinking?
Would you like to know what the world’s top performers are thinking in their moments of brilliance?
Have you ever had a great day? A great performance?
Have you ever been in that zone where everything goes right?
We’ve all had experiences like this. If you think back to that time, can you remember what you were thinking?
Your thoughts have great influence over your actions and your ability to perform.
I don’t think we spend enough time teaching our athletes, employees, students, children how to think properly. It’s a craft and it revolves around WHAT you are thinking about. We get caught up thinking about the results or the outcomes rather than focusing on the process or the task at hand.
Today, we revisit one of our favorite Krush Conversations with Dr. Jacques Dallaire of Performance Prime.
We discuss:
- What you should be thinking about
- What the top performers are thinking in their moments of Brilliance
- What Good Coaches are focusing on to help their athletes perform
- And how you can focus your thoughts for top performance.
It’s impossible to have two thoughts simultaneously and allowing distracting thoughts in can take your performance to places you really do not want it to go.

A Talk with the Pro’s About Player Performance, Health, & Injury Prevention
Are you missing the mark when it comes to your development? Is your team or organization off course and struggling to compete and to keep players healthy?
We often say, “If you want to know what to do, look to the pros.” That’s exactly what we are doing on this episode of Krush Performance as we talk with TD Forss, Head Athletic Therapist for the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, and Nate Hay, Head Athletic Therapist for the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.
There are major mistakes being made at virtually every level of sport when it comes to maximizing performance and developing player potential. This week on Krush Performance, we go inside professional sport to discuss long term development and the number one reason athletes and players do not reach their potential….. injuries.
We talk about the issues facing sport and player development and what can need to do to help our athletes stay healthy and stay in sport.
What are some of the most effective ways to avoid injury and where are we at in our understanding of long term development?
Having knowledge is empowering but acting on it is where the real power is found. Knowing what to do to reduce your risk of injury it is perhaps the most important thing we can accomplish.
I hope you find this episode informative and helpful, let us know what you think.

Performance Environments & Motivation w/Dan Pink
As the Krush Performance Summer Tour continues, we come to you from beautiful Brazil as we discuss key components for building performance environments and what we know about motivation.
I recently read a very interesting article about high performance teams, it got me thinking about the recipe for building and providing an environment where people can prosper, develop and perform at their very best. One of the key ingredients, one that exists in virtually all successful performance environments, is trust. We talk about that and I review in more detail our top priorities for human performance. They are written in stone here until we get convinced there is a better approach.
The article also reminded me of a fantastic conversation with had with Dan Pink, speaker, author and one of the top business thinkers of our time, as we discussed his best selling book, “Drive.” More specifically. we talk about the difference between what we know about motivation and what we actually do in sport, business, and life. It is a great conversation and I wanted to replay in this episode. It also sets us up for some of the episodes we have in the works over the next few weeks.
Key ingredients of successful cultures and what really motivates us in this week’s episode of Krush Performance. Enjoy and share with your friends, teammates and families.

Performance Planning & The Personal Side of Pro Sport
The scales of Summer are slowly tilting towards the fall and with the MLB Trade Deadline behind us we are going to talk about the human side of pro sports as player will wake up the day after a trade in a new uniform, with a new team in a new city and some a new country. There is a personal side to sport we often over look.
And, as the hockey season approaches we ask, “Are you ready?”.
I talk with Manny Schmidt, certified NHL agent and Founder of Link Management International, about harnessing player potential and the importance of long term plans and short term goals.
If you are a player, parent, coach or sport administrator this is a very important conversation regarding player development.

Also, as we launch our KP Sport Baseball/Softball Performance Drink, it was great to up close and personal with some of the best athletes in the world. It had me thinking once again what makes the best tick, how did they arrive at the top level of competition, and what can you do to tap into your potential and truly find out how far you can go?
We talk long term player development, key factors in human performance and the important steps in long term development strategies.

Priorities And Calories
The two most precious commodities known to mankind are, in my opinion, health and time. Your priorities will greatly influence how you use and take advantage of your time and what you eat & drink have a massive impact on your health and your performance.
I just returned from an incredible trip with MLB to historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. They were hosting the MLB/USA Softball Elite Development Invitational with some of the top young players from around the USA and an incredible group of coaches. There, we discussed the keys to performance in sport and it always seems to circle back to building a solid foundation and our Four Top Priorities for performance.
When it comes to nutrition and hydration, there are many things to discuss but even here in the Krush nutrition discussions, all roads lead us back to Sugar!
This week, we discuss the top priorities for performance and I want to share with you why a calorie is not a calorie and how you can start making sure your diet is helping you not hurting you as we share a powerful discussion we had with Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Bio-medical Research for the Glycemic Research Institute in Washington DC.

How Baseball Is Leading Sport In Athlete Development
The MLB All-Star break marks the midpoint of the most grueling schedule in all of sport.
As the very best players at every level of the Game took to the field to compete in the Commissioners Cup, the Futures Game, the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game itself, we wanted to take a step back and reflect on not only the crazy first half of the 2019 MLB season but baseball as a whole.
Baseball, steeped in tradition and classically very slow to adapt and change is now proving to be a sport leader in a number of areas.
Baseball is:
- Most certainly The Undisputed leader in on-line presence! No other sport comes close.
- Analytics and numbers. No other sport comes close.
- Trending to be a leader in player development – the minor league system sets this up nicely and the baseball world is now gaining momentum in this area.
- Participation: while MLB fan attendance is down there is growing interest in the game globally.
This week on Krush Performance we look at Major League Baseball’s mid-season numbers, consider the second half and I’ll talk player development and injury prevention.

The Next Great Opportunity In Human Performance
We have been building, creating, and looking for ways to push human performance forward. Faster, higher, stronger, more agile, quickness, technical and tactical – we have this stuff down! We understand this and we now how to make it happen so where do we look for the next great opportunity for pushing human performance forward?
Technology and the mind!
Technology in equipment and apparel, technology in player and athlete tracking but mostly the technology that is now allowing us to tap into and train in real time one of the most powerful tools we have…..the mind.
I’m not just talking psychology here. No…..much, much more than that!
In this episode of Krush Performance, I talk with Danny Dankner, cofounder and CEO of Intelligym, a unique cognitive training program that caught my eye years ago.
Could this be another great athlete development weapon in our arsenal? We think so.
Also, as the NBA landscape sees a MASSIVE shift and free agency in the NHL and NBA rolls on we ask the question: What is the most painful player move of all time?

The Art Of Athlete Evaluation
Have you ever wondered what great players looks like? What makes them tick? What really makes them special?
Well, we wonder this all of the time and as every team works to breakdown and analyze their players and search and identify new upcoming talent, testing becomes a big part of the process but are we collecting the right data and the right information?
Are the tests we are performing at the combines, training camps and talent development programs giving us the right information? Giving us relevant information? Are teams and organizations using the data in the right way?
You may be surprised.
This week, we talk with Joel Jackson, Development Coach and Sport Conditioning Expert at the University of Alberta about his new article, “Making Sense of the NHL Fitness Testing Combine Results.”
We always talk to our athletes about the importance of making yourself special. One sure-fire way to work towards making yourself special and standing out is to take your greatest strength and mastering it. Become one of – if not THE – best at what you are good at and then build around those strengths to take you to new levels of performance.
Join us as we talk testing data in sport this week on Krush Performance.
